The Super Bowl: 80/20 in Action

This weekend is the big showdown between the 49ers and the Chiefs. Mahomes vs Purdy will make for a memorable night. Like any top performer, the best quarterbacks know how to focus on the critical few efforts that will maximize their chances of winning.

Listen to what 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers had to say.

"Anything [we’re doing] in this building that has nothing to do with winning needs to be assessed.  Everything that we do has to have a purpose ... the (expletive) that has nothing to do with winning has to get out of the building."

For Aaron and the Jets, winning is an “80”. In fact, swapping out “winning” for “80’s” creates a powerful 80/20 leadership moment.

“Anything [we’re doing] in this building that has nothing to do with 80’s needs to be assessed.  Everything that we do has to have a purpose ... the (expletive) that has nothing to do with 80’s has to get out of the building."

To cultivate a winning 80/20 business, relentlessly prioritize the 80’s (the critical few) and stop wasting time on the 20’s (the trivial many).

To operate at peak performance, Mahomes and Purdy have optimized their training, nutrition, and recovery, but are they spending their time counting macros, planning workouts, and cooking meals? NO! Those tasks, while crucial to their performance, can be outsourced, freeing up time for them to focus on the work that only they can do.

Too often, as leaders we become entangled in meetings, emails, processes, systems, and reports that keep us busy. However important these activities may seem, they are a symptom of the complexity that prevent us from focusing on the critical few tasks that would truly move the needle.

When the 80’s are well-defined, the need for dozens of meetings, reports, and processes disappears. The 80’s are consistently prioritized inside every department and across every level, because everyone understands which tasks add the most value without needing another meeting or email.

Learn from the quarterbacks we’ll be watching this weekend. Align your team’s efforts on the 80’s, reduce time and effort spent on the 20’s, and experience the magic of 80/20 as your business becomes extremely profitable while everyone (including you!) works less
